CLASSIC MODEL RAILROADING

Model railroading appeals to people in all walks of life. Model railroading can be a very social hobby. Model railroading is not just for geeks. Model railroading is an activity of constant improvement and learning. Building a model railroad is a great family-oriented hobby. You build the model railroad that you want. After all, we are building a model railroad.

Trains
Collectible toy electric trains to detailed model trains, you get to choose, or, are you interested in model trains and just starting out. From basement model railroads and Lionel collecting, to trains that run through your garden. Families enjoy "hands-on" interactive modeling, designing and building the miniature worlds our little trains roll through. If you are interested in model railroading, developing and improving skills employed in building and maintaining bench work, track, wiring, and scenery, not to mention operating trains in a realistic setting, building your own model railroad may be the ticket.

Track
You can create layouts using just the tracks you have in that box in your cellar without purchasing any additional piece of track. Remember, model railroad operations require clear and easy access to the track along with good operator visibility of the trains. This means that tracks need to be within reaching distance from an aisle, usually 30" or less. Experience shows that the aisle needs to be slightly wider at the end of "blobs", where the tracks make a 180 degree turn from one aisle to the next. The track work and rolling stock need to work together. Cars with problems (constantly derail, coupler problems, weight problems) need to be banished to the RIP track until they can be repaired. Your goals here are a track power system that works reliably and is very simple for operators to understand.

Building The Layout
Everything from figuring out the right steps for building a kit, to designing a layout to developing an operating plan for your railroad all require logical thought and planning. Mom can be building this part, dad working on that, while the kids are working on something else. Model railroading can be great family fun, but we can also learn a bit of engineering by studying the prototypes for the models we are building.

Serious About The Model Railroading Hobby?

The National Model Railroad Association is the largest organization devoted to the development, promotion, and enjoyment of the hobby of model railroading. The NMRA was founded in 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in order to provide a service to the hobby of model railroading. Being a member of the NMRA entitles you to a multitude of services, all geared toward expanding your enjoyment of the hobby.
The NMRA's Achievement Program, or "AP", is designed to help modelers improve their skills and get more out of their hobby. The "AP" gives recognition to members who have displayed a high degree of skill or service to the hobby.

Building a model railroad leads to learning about the real things. If you've made it this far, you're probably already interested in building a model railroad for some reason. If you find a group of model railroaders, you'll find doctors and lawyers, engineers, shop keepers, business people, military folks, mechanics, carpenters, artists, athletes, and politicians. Our goal is to help those who are interested in building a model railroad but who have never done it before or to assist those who may have a simple track plan and now want to learn more. "All aboard!" for model railroading fun and adventure.
